What is Medical Racism?

These are 3 of the many ways racism finds its way in the medical field.

- People who were raised with racial bias or have an unconscious bias and work in the field

- Institutional/systemic racism changes the quality of health care for BIPOC

- Negative health impacts from racism in society

Here are some examples:

“Pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 live births for Black and Native women older than 30 was 4-5x as high as it was for white women.”

“Discrimination and racism can accelerate aging and produces disproportionate burdens of disease on black Americans and other minority populations.”

“Physicians were more likely to underestimate the pain of black patients (47%) relative to nonblack

patients (33.5%)”
